Bengaluru Students Bag Prestigious Award in the UK for an Innovative Device That Tracks Bee Health
iBeeHive is a device that allows the beekeeper to remotely monitor the health of bees and kill pests that infest the hive.
Competing with over 90 international teams between the age group of 9-16, a six-member team from Greenwood High International School, Bengaluru, won the second spot at the FIRST LEGO League International Open Championship 2017 for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills in the UK.
Team Flaming Phoenix with Aditya P Uchil, Aditya Vasisht, Akshay B Sivaraman, Ratan Shankar, Rachita Rajesh and Sahana Athreya, developed iBeeHive, a device that allows the beekeeper to remotely monitor the health of bees and kill pests that infest the hive.
The device fits into any beehive and can be connected to the beekeeper’s cellphone.
The theme of the league this season was ‘Animal Allies’ to help the teams create a way of improving the interaction between humans and their chosen animal. Team Flaming Phoenix chose bees.
In an interview with the Times of India, Akshay Sivaraman said, “There are two different sensors used in iBeeHive; one is infra-red and the other is for temperature.”
Aditya P Uchil added, “The infrared sensor at the entrance of the box is used for keeping tabs on incoming and outgoing bees. It is monitored by the beekeeper’s Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone. The other sensor is used for maintaining optimal temperature (35 Celsius).”
The team also secured a second spot in the Robot Performance award category, where the teams have to design, build and program a LEGO robot to autonomously complete animal-themed missions to solve in the shortest possible time. Their robot did it in 2.30 minutes.

What is FIRST LEGO League?
FIRST LEGO League is a global robotics-based, life skills challenge program that promotes enthusiasm for discovery, science and technology in children aged from 9 to 16. It inspires young people to take an interest in engineering and technology and its application and helps develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers like design and technology, programming and control, mathematics, research, presentation skills, strategic thinking and teamwork.

The idea is to embark on an adventurous challenging journey based on current, real-world issues. The teams are guided by a team coach and assisted by mentors using LEGO Mindstorms robotics.
This helps them like scientists and engineers, provides a hands-on learning experience and helps them overcome obstacles.
It has a turnover of over 2.5 lakh young participants every year. The FLL Open Championship aims to promote awareness about engineering and encourage youngsters to consider careers in STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
